What Makes a Stay Truly Memorable?

Recently, we stepped away from the chalet and into the Freedom FM studio to talk about Sojourn, hospitality, and something we think about more than almost anything else:

What makes a stay truly memorable?

The conversation brought us back to an idea we have come to believe deeply: great hospitality is not really about doing more. It is about paying closer attention.

It is noticing why someone is coming.

An anniversary. A birthday. A much-needed weekend away. Time with family. A chance to reconnect. Or sometimes simply the need to disappear into the woods for a couple of days and breathe.

When you know the reason behind the stay, you can create something that feels different.

Not just prepared.

Prepared for them.

Hospitality Is About Making People Feel Seen

One of the ideas we love from Unreasonable Hospitality is that memorable hospitality often comes from making people feel recognized, understood, and cared for in ways they did not necessarily expect.

That does not always mean something extravagant.

Sometimes it is having the information a guest needs before they have to ask.

Sometimes it is the coffee waiting in the kitchen.

A warm robe after the sauna.

A restaurant recommendation that becomes the best meal of the weekend.

A small surprise because someone mentioned they were celebrating something special.

Or simply creating a place where, for a little while, there is nothing they need to figure out.

To us, that is luxury.

The Small Things Are Usually the Big Things

When we think back on our own favorite trips, we rarely remember every detail of the room or every amenity.

We remember moments.

A quiet morning.

A beautiful dinner.

Music playing somewhere in the distance.

The way a place smelled when we walked in.

A host who remembered something we mentioned.

The feeling of having nowhere else we needed to be.

Those are the moments we want Sojourn to create.

Not perfection.

Connection.

Ease.

A sense that someone thought about your experience before you arrived.

Why We Keep Doing This

Hosting has changed the way we think about travel.

Sojourn started as a place our own family could escape to, but over time it became something much more meaningful: a chance to create experiences for other people.

And that is still the part we love most.

Learning why someone is coming.

Thinking about what might make their stay better.

Finding little ways to surprise them.

And hearing afterward about the moment they loved most.

So we want to turn the question back to you.

If you have stayed with us, what is one thing from your Sojourn stay that you still remember?

And if you have simply been following our journey, what is one small detail that makes a getaway feel truly special to you?

We would genuinely love to hear it.

Because some of our best ideas for what Sojourn becomes next may just come from you.

Warmly,

Marina & Dima
